kristel kuslapuu won the coveted golden needle award at tallinn fashion week

every fall during tallinn fashion week, the coveted fashion design award golden needle is presented to an outstanding fashion designer or brand for consistency in creation during the last five years. the quality, functionality, beauty and contemporaneity of collections, success in business and export are also taken into consideration.*

this year’s winner is kristel kuslapuu. the collection showcased on the runway featured her signature hand-knitted pieces, as well as a new line of ready to wear items.

kristel kuslapuu is a fashion designer who created her eponymous brand in 2011. she has taken part in numerous fashion shows and she has received international praise for her work, which has been featured in vogue italia and one magazine. kristel kuslapuu comes from a tailoring school background, but she is better known as a knitwear designer who gets inspired by clichés and irony. during her studies, kristel had an internship with back, one of sweden’s most prominent designer brands. kristel kuslapuu is a full-blown maximalist whose designs are known for bold colors, gender fluidity and provocative messages, while her fashion shows are better described as theatrical or performance art rather than just a fashion show.

urbanistic and chic collection that has been interconnected with nature. it is a story about a gardener in the heart of a city,  a story about her large savage garden, the freedom and joy she gets from growing it, the possibility of having it, and her big love for it. inspiration from a sincere lifelong caring and the existence of plants – an ode to the joy of self–cultivation! urbanistic morning melancholy, slightly wild and submissive, savage garden in the busy downtown, full of life and plants reaching to the sky, towards the warm sun.

bohemian flows, tight waists, long slimming lines, caplets and details. different forms of folds have been incorporated into the knitwear, while the coat has intricate partitions, two caplets and large pockets. the collection consists of different shades of colors: flaming reddish orange, sky blue, grayish green, black and white, and cold green. the sublimation print features decorative motif of plants, hands of a gardener, flying horses of the sky and the gardener herself. knitwear is mainly machine woven from cotton with a hint of merino wool. tailored items have been made of organza silk, raw silk, and fine wool and linen, while the bodies and swimsuits bring in the lycra.

august’s ss19 collection will be at revolver in copenhagen, 8-10.08

the center of the inspiration of august’s new collection is futuristic minimalism, virtual illusions and experiences, references of the 80s sci-fi cult movies, and boundaries between dreams and reality, which lead to augmented experiences and immaterial wellbeing.

“the aim of this collection was to bring together ultra-sporty wardrobe details and innovative lightweight materials, which are mixed with sensual futuristic elements, to create a contemporary yet functional collection,” adds äli kargoja, the head designer and founder of august.

most of the fabrics used in the new collection originate from the fabric mills of japan, italy and turkey. blends of cupro and linen, silk and organic cotton, lightweight hologram organza meet in an astral palette of metallic transparency and radiance. the brand continues to use unique and carefully chosen sustainable fabrics and therefore gots certified organic cotton and bamboo jersey remain as the core of august’s basics range. all the items have been designed and produced in estonia.

august’s ss19 collection will be showcased at revolver in copenhagen (event hall, stand number 168). the trade fair will take place during august 8-10.
